New Student Orientation (NSO) is Penn State's orientation to the undergraduate experience for first-year degree candidates and students admitted to the Division of Undergraduate Studies with Conditions. NSO activities take place before students' first semester of classes and include online placement testing, individualized educational planning, and academic advising. Students' families are encouraged to participate in NSO.

Completion of an ALEKS math assessment is a student’s first step in NSO.  The submission of the assessment enables the student to take the second step, completion of an Educational Planning Survey.

Campus Visit

Within one week after completing the Educational Planning Survey, a student receives an email invitation to make a reservation to attend NSO at his/her campus of admission. For University Park students, NSO is an overnight experience.

Students who have questions about NSO should contact the Office for Student Orientation and Transition Programs at 814-865-4178 or
