Grade Report and Transcript Symbols

The following symbols may appear on a student's grade report and transcript in place of a grade. A student's grade-point average is not affected by these symbols (however, the F in the XF symbol-grade is a failing grade).

Grade Report and Transcript Symbols
Symbol Recorded Meaning of Symbols on Student Academic Records
AU Student registered for class as an auditor and attended regularly (Senate Policy 48-80).
DF* Deferred grade (Senate Policy 48-40).
FL Student failed a course taken under the pass/fail option. (This option has been replaced by the satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading option.)
I, INCP* Incomplete. Student received a DF or NG grade symbol. In a student's grade summary, the I indicates incomplete averages; INCP is recorded beside the semester for which reporting is incomplete.

PS Student passed a course taken under the pass/fail grading option. (This option has been replaced by the satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading option.)

S Student earned credits through a proficiency exam prior to summer 2009. (Effective summer 2009, proficiency examinations are offered as credit by examination.)

UN Unsatisfactory achievement in a course taken under satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading option--UN indicates unsatisfactory achievement (D, F) (Senate Policy 49-60).
W Official withdrawal (Senate Policy 56-30).
W Student registered for a course as an auditor and did not attend regularly (Senate Policy 48-80).

WN Withdrew, no grade. Student processed a course late drop (Senate Policy 34-89).
WP Withdrew, passing. Student processed a course late drop and was passing at that time (Senate Policy 34-89). Effective fall 2010, this symbol will not be used.

*When a letter grade is submitted for a DF or NG, the grade is entered on the transcript, the grade-point average is recalculated, and the I and INCP symbols are removed.
